TYSL during Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15th was International Dot Day. With the theme of “Celebrate Creativity, Courage and Collaboration” it gave us a chance to think about transforming our library through the programs we provide.

Now we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, Sept 15 – Oct 15th. This month provides a plethora of ideas to enlighten our stakeholders while we transform our libraries. Here are a few ideas to get you started:1. How many Hispanic students are in your school?

  1. When they enter the library do they get a sense that there’s something in there especially for them?
    • Display of books in Spanish, particularly hot novels.
    • Biographies of famous Hispanic people: include novelists, athletes, politicians, etc.
  2. Create a challenge.
    • Translation feature.
    • Read aloud feature.
    • Ebook in Spanish.
  3. Provide professional development for teachers on the bells and whistles of your digital resources such as:
    • Jeopardy PowerPoint or similar and have students create the categories…involve your stakeholders.
  4. When they enter the library do they get a sense that there’s something in there especially for them?
  5.

  6.  Morning announcements related to Hispanic culture contributions to the USA.

This is just a beginning. As you create your own ideas to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month please share them on the TYSL blog.
